An analysis of the nature of different collaborative group structures is undertaken with a focus on the technologies available to support such structures. Through this analysis a framework is described for the selection of appropriate group structures considering the longevity of the structure, the level of flexibility that the group has in accomplishing its objectives, whether the group has a formal or informal mandate from an organization, the number of participants, the geographic dispersion of the participants and the overall nature of the objectives to be achieved.
Group structures considered include Communities of Practice, Centers of Practice, Special Interest Groups, Centers of Competence and Communities of Competence. Supporting technologies are described and associated with the different group structures with an emphasis not only on the support of the collaborative structure but with consideration for longer term knowledge management objectives that may exist.
Keywords:
communities of practice, knowledge management, communities of competence, knowledge management technologies
